Thriving or Surviving?

We all want to be happy. Having a more joyful life is attractive to each one of us. So, what do we need to do to be more joyful? What hinders us from experiencing true joy? Every day we encounter circumstances that can potentially steal our joy. Anger, bitterness, refusing to forgive, and strife can certainly distract us from finding our joy in the Lord. Perhaps, like me, you are one of the many people who endures chronic pain or illness. Fear, worry, doubt or trying to control people or circumstances can also rob us of a joyful heart. Many times we go through trials that seem overwhelming, or we go through a tremendous loss that may cause us to feel that we can never be happy again. James 1:2-3 says: "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." When we recognize that there is an important work going on in our lives through the trials we endure, it can change our perspective about our suffering. If our lives are yielded to God's purposes, not just trying to please ourselves, we can get a glimpse into how our testimony can honor Him, and be used for His Kingdom and glory. There is so much joy in looking beyond ourselves, and our temporary trials, and focusing instead on the good that God may want to do through us in the lives of others. Our difficulties can make us more sensitive to others. They can help us to be better comforters, and friends. When we are humbled through our problems, our hearts can be more open to hearing God's truth. So, let's not just GO through it! Let's GROW through it! Let's not just SURVIVE our trials. Let's THRIVE! May we allow our suffering to make us more like Christ, the ultimate example of grace and love, and the giver of everlasting JOY!
